📝 Synopsis#

The Jurassic Park series is the most influential dinosaur franchise in cinema history, launched by Steven Spielberg. It tells the story of humanity’s attempt to resurrect dinosaurs through genetic engineering and the adventures—and disasters—that follow. This collection includes all six films released from 1993 to 2022.

Jurassic Park (1993)#

Billionaire John Hammond extracts dinosaur DNA from mosquitoes preserved in amber and successfully clones multiple species. He builds a theme park called “Jurassic Park” on Isla Nublar and invites paleontologist Alan Grant, paleobotanist Ellie Sattler, and chaos theorist Ian Malcolm for a preview.

When humans try to play God, the consequences are often catastrophic.

The park’s security system collapses due to internal sabotage, and dinosaurs escape their enclosures. The T-Rex’s roar and the Velociraptors’ hunt became the nightmares of an entire generation.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)#

Four years later, Isla Sorna serves as the dinosaurs’ secondary breeding ground. Hammond’s nephew plans to transport dinosaurs to San Diego for a new park, while Hammond sends a team to document the creatures. Ian Malcolm joins the mission to find his girlfriend Sarah.

Dinosaurs shouldn’t be human playthings—they belong to nature.

When corporate greed meets primal force, disaster strikes again. The T-Rex running through San Diego’s streets remains one of the series’ most iconic sequences.

Jurassic Park III (2001)#

Dr. Grant is tricked into an “aerial tour” of Isla Sorna by a couple searching for their missing son. After their plane crashes, they discover the island has evolved even deadlier predators—the Spinosaurus.

Fear comes from the unknown, and the island is full of unknowns.

Jurassic World (2015)#

22 years later, Jurassic World park has been operating on Isla Nublar for a decade. To attract visitors, geneticists create a new hybrid dinosaur—the Indominus Rex. But this genetic monster proves far smarter and more vicious than anticipated.

Human arrogance never changes—it only takes new forms.

Claire and Owen team up to rescue trapped tourists, culminating in the T-Rex and Velociraptor teaming up against the Indominus Rex.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)#

A dormant volcano is about to erupt, threatening the dinosaurs with extinction. Claire and Owen return to rescue them, only to uncover a genetic company’s conspiracy—a dinosaur auction and weaponization program.

When dinosaurs enter human society, who are the real beasts?

The film ends with dinosaurs released into the human world, completely changing the series’ landscape.

Jurassic World: Dominion (2022)#

Dinosaurs and humans coexist globally, facing unprecedented ecological challenges. Locust plagues, genetic conspiracies, and returning characters form the series’ finale.

The end of dominion is also the beginning of a new balance.

😈 Sarcastic Review#

Spielberg’s Miracle, Hollywood’s Cash Cow#

1993’s Jurassic Park was a milestone in film technology revolution. When the first Brachiosaurus raised its head, audiences witnessed not just the resurrection of dinosaurs, but the coming-of-age of CGI technology. Spielberg, like a magician, brought creatures from millions of years ago back to life on modern screens.

However, the halo of technology also obscures the series’ weaknesses. Apart from the first film achieving high standards in plot, theme, and character development, subsequent entries mostly recycle the “dinosaurs chasing people” formula. Dinosaurs are forever the protagonists; humans are just supporting characters and prey.

The Dinosaur Movie Dilemma#

The Jurassic Park series faces a fundamental problem: dinosaur species are limited, and scare patterns are predictable. Audiences know T-Rex will roar, Velociraptors will open doors, and Pteranodons will snatch people. When surprises become routines, the series’ vitality begins to decay.

The Jurassic World trilogy attempted to break this deadlock with hybrid dinosaurs, but the Indominus Rex and Indoraptor feel like “innovation for innovation’s sake,” lacking the authenticity and awe of natural dinosaurs. Man-made monsters can never match nature’s masterpieces.

Character Development Inconsistency#

The first film became a classic largely due to its three-dimensional characters. Alan Grant’s transformation regarding children, Ian Malcolm’s scientist persona, and Hammond’s idealism—each character has a complete arc.

Good characters make viewers care about the story beyond dinosaur chases.

In subsequent films, characters become increasingly instrumentalized. Chris Pratt’s Owen is a typical action hero—handsome, capable, loves animals—but lacks internal conflict. Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire’s transformation from corporate executive to dinosaur protector feels forced.

Theme Inheritance and Betrayal#

The first film’s core theme is “human arrogance”—we think we can control nature, but only open Pandora’s box. This theme is perfectly presented through Hammond’s naivety, Malcolm’s warnings, and Nedry’s betrayal.

Humans try to play God and are ultimately judged by their own creations.

But subsequent films gradually betray this theme. Dinosaurs become mere thriller elements, while genetic ethics and ecological balance are marginalized. The Jurassic World series’ “dinosaur coexistence” setting could have deeply explored human-nature relationships but instead became background for action sequences.

Visual Effects Evolution and Regression#

Interestingly, the series’ visual effects haven’t simply evolved. The first film extensively used practical models and animatronic dinosaurs, combined with limited but masterful CGI, creating convincing realism. The T-Rex attacking the jeep scene remains a textbook example of thriller filmmaking.

Realism comes from physically present actors and props, not pure digital stacking.

Later films over-rely on CGI—dinosaurs become more detailed and fluid, but lose that “touchable” quality. Action sequences grow larger, but emotional impact diminishes.

Commercial Success and Artistic Compromise#

The series has grossed over $5 billion worldwide, making it one of Hollywood’s most successful franchises. But commercial success also means conservatism—each new installment must deliver the “dinosaur chase” scenes audiences expect, while innovation can only be tested at the margins.

An IP is a double-edged sword, bringing resources while imposing shackles.

Dinosaurs’ Cultural Significance#

Regardless of criticism, the Jurassic Park series successfully implanted dinosaurs into modern pop culture. The T-Rex’s roar, the Velociraptor’s cunning, the Brachiosaurus’s elegance—they’ve become globally shared cultural symbols.

It made countless children fall in love with dinosaurs, and countless adults rediscover awe for the ancient world.
