Nezha: Mo tong nao hai (also known as Ne Zha 2) is the official sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Nezha: The Demon Boy Is Born, continuing the story of Nezha and Ao Bing’s journey of rebirth.

After the heavenly calamity, although the souls of Nezha and Ao Bing are preserved, their physical bodies are on the verge of dissipating. Taiyi Zhenren plans to use the Seven-Colored Lotus to rebuild their bodies. However, the process of reconstructing their physical forms is fraught with numerous challenges.

Will the Seven-Colored Lotus successfully restore Nezha and Ao Bing’s physical forms? Where will their fates ultimately lead?

😈 Snarky Review#

After five long years, Nezha: Mo tong nao hai has finally arrived! The first film shattered Chinese box office records with 5 billion yuan, so the pressure on this sequel is immense. My verdict? It’s solid, but perhaps too “solid” for its own good.

The Jiaozi team clearly understood the formula for success—stick with what worked: “defy destiny” theme + flashy fight scenes + emotional soundtrack.

The story takes an interesting turn with the “rebirth” angle. Let’s be honest, after the first film pushed “my fate is determined by myself, not by heaven” to its极限, they needed a fresh hook. The Seven-Colored Lotus restoring their bodies is a clever nod to traditional mythology while giving our heroes new challenges.

The problem? This new conflict doesn’t quite reach the dramatic tension of the first film. The Nezha-Ao Bing separation is touching, but something feels… missing.

On the visual front, the sequel is a massiveupgrade. The underwater world is absolutely stunning—those colorful coral reefs, magnificent Dragon Palace palaces, and turbulent waves must have cost a fortune. Action sequences maintain the fluidity of the first film, and the water-fire clash delivers pure visual euphoria.

This is probably the best visual effects in Chinese animation history. Money well spent.

But here’s the issue—the film relies heavily on visual spectacle, and the narrative rhythm feels a bit off. The middle act’s dialogue scenes drag a bit. Without the beloved Nezha and Ao Bing carrying the story, audiences might have gotten restless.

But hey, for a production of this caliber, these are minor quibbles.

Character-wise, Nezha’s “demon child” charm remains lovable, and Ao Bing’s handsomeness is preserved. However, the villain portrayal is pretty one-dimensional—the East Sea Dragon King is a standard “revenge-seeking” archetype lacking depth.

A more complex antagonist would have elevated the story.

Overall, Nezha: Mo tong nao hai is a worthy sequel that reaches new heights in visual effects while playing it safe on narrative innovation. For a commercial blockbuster, that’s more than enough.

If you loved the first film, you won’t be disappointed. But if you’re expecting it to surpass the original, you might want to adjust your expectations.

Here’s hoping the third installment brings bigger surprises! After all, the “Fengshen Universe” blueprint is just beginning to unfold.

Go Chinese animation! Break Hollywood’s monopoly—it’s up to you!
