Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is an ordinary Brooklyn teenager living in a world full of possibilities. His father is a dedicated police officer, his mother a nurse, and they both hope Miles will become a successful engineer. But Miles dreams of something different. When he’s accidentally bitten by a radioactive spider, he gains extraordinary abilities—he becomes Spider-Man.

But Miles soon discovers he’s not the only Spider-Man. In a mad experiment to open a portal to parallel universes, Kingpin accidentally brings Spider-People from different dimensions into Miles’ world: there’s Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), a middle-aged, divorced, out-of-shape version of the original; Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), the Spider-Woman from another dimension; Spider-Ham from a cartoon universe; Peni Parker, a girl from the future with a spider-robot; and Spider-Man Noir from a black-and-white film noir world.

The film’s greatest achievement is how it completely reinvents the traditional Spider-Man superhero narrative.

First, the visual effects are revolutionary. Sony’s animation team created an unprecedented hybrid style: perfectly blending traditional 2D comic book aesthetics with 3D animation technology. Every frame looks like it was torn from a comic book—exaggerated lines, dynamic text bubbles, split-screen effects, and even “Wham!” and “Bam!” sound effects. This style isn’t just an homage to Spider-Man’s comic book origins; it’s a bold breakthrough in animation art.

Miles Morales is the most convincing “second-generation Spider-Man” ever created. He’s not Tony Stark’s carefully chosen successor, nor is he a chosen one forced by fate. He’s a genuinely ordinary teenager: he makes mistakes, hesitates, feels fear—but precisely because of this, his growth feels so authentic and moving. When he finally jumps off a building wearing his self-made suit, viewers feel a genuine thrill—not that “another Spider-Man was born,” but that “a hero found his own path.”

The Spider-People from different universes are another highlight. The middle-aged, down-on-his-luck Peter B. Parker subverts the “perfect hero” image—he’s a loser, a good guy who messes up, but still shows his heroic nature at crucial moments. Gwen Stacy proves that female superheroes can be both powerful and deep. And Spider-Ham, Peni Parker, and Spider-Man Noir inject absurdist humor and surprise into the story.

Kingpin as the villain is equally noteworthy. His motivation isn’t pure evil, but stems from the fear of losing his family—a sorrowful story twisted by wrong methods. This complexity makes him not just a “bad guy” but a fleshed-out character.

The film’s core theme—“anyone can be Spider-Man”—might sound like a cliché, but through Miles’ story, it truly embodies this message. It’s not saying “anyone can have superpowers,” but “anyone can choose to be a hero, regardless of background, race, gender, or age.” This universal value still carries powerful resonance in today’s flood of superhero movies.

The only minor flaw is that some subplots feel rushed, like Peter B. Parker’s relationship with MJ being handled too simply. But this doesn’t affect the film’s status as a milestone work.
