📝 Synopsis
Bruce Banner is a scientist who was exposed to gamma radiation during an experiment, transforming him into a green monster. Whenever his emotions flare up, he loses control and unleashes devastating power.
He is not a hero; he is just a pitiful soul chased by his own shadow.
The military sees him as a threat and dispatches elite forces to capture him. Meanwhile, Banner must evade pursuit while searching for a cure, trying to reclaim his life.

😈 Sarcastic Review
From a narrative structure perspective, this film follows the typical superhero origin formula: gaining abilities through an accident → evading pursuit → final showdown. The pacing isn’t sluggish, but it genuinely lacks surprises.
This formulaic screenplay proves that superhero films in 2008 had yet to learn self-breakthrough.
The director’s visual style deserves mention. The CGI for the Hulk was decent for its time, at least a significant improvement over Ang Lee’s 2003 version. Action sequences were passable, but lacked iconic moments.
If a film’s only highlight is “better than the previous one,” then it has already admitted its own mediocrity.
Edward Norton’s performance is one of the few bright spots. He successfully gave Banner the pain and struggle the character deserved. The tension between a brilliant scientist’s arrogance and the monster’s instincts was portrayed with considerable depth.
Liv Tyler’s character is relatively flat, almost becoming a functional existence. This can’t entirely blame the actress—the script simply didn’t give her much room to perform.
The true tragedy isn’t that Banner became a monster, but that the writers flattened a potentially profound character into a factory-line product.
Regarding themes, the film attempts to explore “where the line between monster and human lies.” Banner’s pain stems from losing control of his own body—this is actually a metaphor for modern anxiety—we’re all troubled by some internal “monster.”
Ironically, the military in the film represents another kind of “monster”—the unchecked power of authority. When violence becomes legal and unconstrained, it is more terrifying than any gamma radiation.
Overall, The Incredible Hulk is a decent commercial film, but nothing more. It has neither the humor of the Spider-Man series nor the dark ambition of The Dark Knight.
It is like instant noodles—you can fill your stomach, but there’s no nutrition; it’s okay while eating, but you forget about it after.
As a stepping stone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it completed its historical mission. As an independent film, it only passes muster.
