The story begins in a mysterious elevator. They are called “Runners,” attempting to explore the maze’s exit every day but never succeeding. The maze walls reorganize every night, and deadly mechanical monsters called “Grievers” lurk within.

Thomas’s arrival breaks the community’s balance. His curiosity and adventurous spirit make him defy rules, repeatedly entering the maze. During one exploration, he discovers a shocking secret: the maze is not a prison, but a carefully designed experiment. As memory fragments gradually return, Thomas realizes they were all part of an experiment, stripped of memories and placed here for testing. When the first girl Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) is sent into the maze, everything begins to accelerate toward collapse.

😈 Review#

Honestly, The Maze Runner’s most attractive aspect is its suspenseful premise. A group of amnesiac teenagers trapped in a shifting maze, facing mechanical monster threats daily—this concept alone is enough to keep audiences watching for two hours. Wes Ball captures the maze’s horror quite well: those towering stone walls, dark corridors, suddenly appearing Grievers, all creating oppressive survival pressure for viewers.

Dylan O’Brien’s performance is this film’s biggest highlight. He portrays Thomas’s confused yet determined state very authentically—not “heroic” bravery, but more like an ordinary person’s fear and struggle facing the unknown. Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt is also an interesting character, his calm rationality contrasts sharply with Thomas’s impulsive passion, their interactions make the community’s political landscape more complex.

However, this film has some flaws. The biggest issue is the ending—when the protagonists finally escape the maze, they discover outside is a post-apocalyptic laboratory, all mysteries are glossed over. This “you think it’s an ending, but it’s actually the next movie’s beginning” approach feels like being tricked. And while the maze’s internal setting is cool, logically it’s hard to justify: why does the maze move? Why do Grievers only appear at night? These don’t receive convincing explanations.

Special effects-wise, this film is absolutely top-tier. The maze’s shifting scenes are breathtaking, those stone walls reorganizing under roaring sounds with tense music create intense oppressive atmosphere. Grievers’ design is also unique, half-mechanical half-biological monster form has both sci-fi feel and horror feel, one of the more creative monster designs in recent youth sci-fi films.
