X-Men: Apocalypse, the ninth film in the X-Men series, stunned audiences in 2016. Director Bryan Singer returned to deliver an epic showdown between superhero fate and human survival.

The story begins in ancient Egypt, where the ancient mutant “Apocalypse” (Oscar Isaac) is betrayed and sleeps for millennia. In 1983, he is accidentally awakened, discovering his powers far exceed modern imagination. Apocalypse firmly believes mutants are Earth’s true rulers, and begins recruiting four horsemen to reshape world order. His goal is to completely destroy human civilization and establish a new era of mutant dominance.

Meanwhile, young X-Men are in their growth phase. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) teaches a new batch of mutant students at his school, including Storm who can control weather, Nightcrawler who can teleport instantly, and Jean Grey with telepathic abilities. When Apocalypse’s power threatens all humanity, these young mutants must unite under their mentor’s guidance to fight this ancient powerful enemy. Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender), after losing his family, falls into despair and is tempted by Apocalypse’s power, becoming one of the four horsemen.

😈 Review#

Honestly, X-Men: Apocalypse’s biggest selling point is its “epic feel.” Apocalypse’s design as a villain is quite impressive—an ancient mutant with multiple abilities, able to teleport, control matter, and enhance others’ powers. This “god-level” setting gives the story genuine apocalyptic crisis, far more advanced than those villains simply wanting to conquer the world.

Oscar Isaac’s performance, though hidden under heavy makeup, effectively conveys Apocalypse’s oppressive presence through body language and voice. That ancient god-like majesty and coldness sends chills down your spine. However, Apocalypse’s appearance is somewhat exaggerated—purple skin and massive physique look a bit like a game Boss, lacking some realism.

The young actors each have their highlights. Sophie Turner as Jean Grey is one of this film’s most watched characters, she portrays well the contradiction between Jean’s vulnerability and hidden immense power. Evan Peters as Quicksilver again becomes the film’s most amusing presence—his slow-motion rescue scene during an explosion, paired with 80s pop music, is absolutely one of X-Men series’ most classic moments.

However, this film has several issues. The biggest complaint is the plot is somewhat overcrowded—too many characters and storylines, causing many characters to become background decoration. Angel, Psylocke have almost no screen time, existing merely to display Apocalypse’s four horsemen. And the ending feels somewhat rushed, Jean suddenly awakening Phoenix Force to defeat Apocalypse feels like writers couldn’t find a better solution, so they just let the heroine “unlock powers” to win.

In terms of special effects, this film is absolutely top-tier among Marvel movies. Apocalypse destroying city scenes are breathtaking, those buildings collapsing instantly with震撼音效 create intense apocalyptic atmosphere. Quicksilver’s slow-motion scene is even more a visual feast, every frame full of creativity and humor, one of the most impressive visual innovations in superhero films in recent years.
