📝 Synopsis
Since his fateful encounter with three adorable little girls - Margo, Edith, and Agnes - the former supervillain Gru has completely transformed. He’s retired from villainy and become a loving father and a businessman making terrible-tasting jellies. Of course, nothing is perfect - during this time, his old partner Dr. Nefario, yearning for the legendary supervillain life, has left to pursue other opportunities.
One day, Gru is kidnapped by the skilled but reckless agent Lucy Wilde. It turns out that Lucy’s organization has developed a serum that can transform living creatures, but their laboratory in the Arctic has been robbed by a mysterious thief. They need Gru, with his villain experience, to go undercover. After some consideration, Gru accepts the mission, bringing along his adorable Minions to form a hilariously bumbling detective duo with Lucy…

🎭 Character Development: From Villain to Super Dad
The most satisfying aspect of Despicable Me 2 is the further development of Gru’s character. If the first film told the story of how a villain was transformed by love, the second film shows how the “reformed” Gru faces new life challenges.
As a full-time dad, Gru’s life has changed dramatically. He’s no longer the supervillain planning heists, but instead worries about birthday parties, homework, and his daughters’ pre-teen issues. This identity shift brings plenty of comedic elements and shows audiences a more well-rounded, warmer Gru.
The addition of new character Lucy Wilde injects fresh energy into the film. This cheerful, athletic female agent not only becomes Gru’s work partner but gradually enters his heart. The clumsy yet sincere romantic storyline between them adds a touch of romance to the film.
🌟 Minion Explosion
Compared to the first film, the Minions get significantly more screen time and creative freedom in the sequel. They’re no longer just Gru’s comedic henchmen but become important characters driving the plot forward.
Almost all the film’s most hilarious scenes involve the Minions: their transformation into purple monsters after being injected with the mutant serum is a series classic; their slapstick performance working at a bakery; and their “wingman” efforts to set up Gru and Lucy. These scenes not only generate plenty of laughs but further boost the Minions’ popularity.
It was precisely because of the Minions’ outstanding performance in this film that they earned their own spinoff movies, becoming one of the most successful supporting character groups in animation history.

💭 Deepened Themes: Love and Belonging
Despicable Me 2 continues the first film’s theme of “home” and deepens it. Gru found his identity as a father in the first film, and in the second, he begins thinking about how to give his children a complete family.
Through the character of Lucy, the film explores the realistic topic of how single-parent families form new families. Gru’s hesitation about Lucy stems from his concern about whether the children can accept a “new mom.” The ending provides a warm answer: true family doesn’t necessarily need blood relations - as long as there’s mutual love, a happy family can be formed.
🎨 Audiovisual Upgrades
Compared to the first film, Despicable Me 2 shows clear improvements in visual presentation. Illumination Entertainment has continued to advance technically - character expressions are more nuanced, action sequences are smoother, and color usage is more vibrant and diverse.
Musically, Pharrell Williams again contributes excellent original songs. The theme song “Happy” became a global hit, its upbeat melody and positive lyrics perfectly matching the film’s tone.
📊 Critical Reception
Despicable Me 2 achieved even greater commercial success than its predecessor, with global box office reaching $970 million, surpassing the first film. The movie received a 7.0 rating on IMDb and 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics generally agreed that while the sequel’s villain isn’t as memorable as Vector from the first film, the balance between family emotions and comedic elements is handled even better, making it an excellent sequel.
🎬 Series Significance
Despicable Me 2 plays an important bridging role in the entire series. It not only consolidates the character relationships established in the first film but also lays the foundation for subsequent works. The wedding of Gru and Lucy at the end marks the official formation of this “non-traditional family” and provides new directions for future stories.
