Synopsis#

John Wick was once the most feared assassin in the underworld, nicknamed “Baba Yaga” - the legendary Boogeyman. He completed impossible missions and retired to live a peaceful life with his wife Helen. However, fate was cruel. Helen died from illness, leaving him a puppy as her final gift and companion.

The puppy became the last warmth in John’s heart, and someone was about to destroy it all.

When Iosef, son of a Russian gangster, broke into John’s home, stole his car, and killed that puppy, John’s world completely collapsed. This puppy was not just Helen’s last gift - it was the final connection between John and a normal life. Furious, John decided to return to the underworld and launch a bloody revenge mission.

John’s revenge journey began in New York. He visited the Continental Hotel - the sanctuary and hub for assassins. Hotel manager Winston provided John with weapons and intelligence, while members of the criminal organization “The High Table” closely watched this legendary assassin’s movements. John used precise, elegant, nearly dance-like gunfight techniques to eliminate those who had harmed him one by one.

“You killed my dog, I take your life” - simple yet deadly logic.

After the first film ended, John completed his revenge but was forced back into the assassin world. In Chapter 2, Italian mob boss Santino D’Antonio used a Blood Oath Marker to force John to fulfill his promise, traveling to Rome to eliminate Santino’s sister. After completing the task, John was hunted by Santino’s men. Ultimately, John killed Santino inside the Continental Hotel, breaking the assassin world’s taboo and becoming a target of The High Table.

In Chapter 3: Parabellum, John became the target of the entire assassin world. Any assassin could kill him within 14 hours and earn a massive bounty. John desperately searched for a way to survive, eventually traveling to the desert to find The Elder of The High Table, begging for forgiveness. The Elder proposed a condition: kill Continental Hotel manager Winston and forever serve The High Table. John pretended to agree, but at the critical moment joined forces with Winston against The High Table’s army.

In Chapter 4, John decided to completely free himself from The High Table’s control. He sought a way to obtain true freedom - challenging The High Table’s highest member, the Marquis de Gramont. This duel would take place in Paris, and John needed to reach Sacre-Coeur before sunrise. Along the way, assassins blocked his path. In the final duel, John faced the Marquis and exchanged his life for true freedom.

”Gun-Fu”: Revolutionary Action Cinema Style#

The John Wick series created an entirely new action film aesthetic - “Gun-Fu.” This style perfectly blends the fluid movements of Eastern martial arts with the precision shooting of Western gunfights, creating nearly dance-like combat scenes.

”Baba Yaga”: The Legend of the Boogeyman#

“Baba Yaga” is a witch from Russian folklore, while in the assassin world, this nickname represents John Wick - a terrifying legendary assassin.

“John Wick isn’t the kind of assassin you hire. He’s the one you call to kill the devil himself.”

This nickname reflects John’s status in the assassin world - he’s not a ordinary assassin, but the ultimate weapon for impossible missions. When John returned to the underworld, every assassin felt fear. Some tried to challenge him, but ultimately understood: you can’t kill the Boogeyman, you can only temporarily stop him.

The High Table: The Underworld’s Highest Power#

The High Table is the highest authority in the assassin world, composed of 12 members representing criminal organizations worldwide. The High Table sets the rules of the assassin world, manages the Continental Hotels, and determines assassins’ fates.

After John killed Santino and violated the Continental Hotel rules, The High Table ordered John’s “excommunication” - any assassin could kill him and earn a bounty. In Chapter 3, The High Table sent an Adjudicator to investigate Winston and the Continental Hotel, ultimately deciding to use an army to destroy the New York Continental.

The High Table represents absolute power and rules, while John represents individual resistance and freedom. This confrontation is the series’ core theme - can one person escape system control and obtain true freedom?

In Chapter 4, John defeated the Marquis de Gramont through a duel, and The High Table’s representative acknowledged John had “obtained freedom.” This is a symbolic victory - John proved in his own way that even facing the most powerful system, an individual can still choose their own destiny.

The Duel: The Only Way to Win Freedom#

Chapter 4’s duel scene is one of the series’ most spectacular moments. John needed to reach Sacre-Coeur before sunrise, facing countless assassins along the way. He fought through Paris streets, train stations, and church stairways - every scene full of style and tension.

The final duel adopted the old-fashioned pistol duel format - both sides alternately shooting until one died or surrendered. Although John was shot, he chose wisdom rather than brute force at the last moment. He used his final bullet to shoot the Marquis’ hand, then waited for the Marquis to try a finishing shot. When the Marquis discovered he had no bullets left, John used a hidden backup gun to end the fight.
