Facing life-threatening danger, Elodie doesn’t wait for a knight to save her. She relies on wisdom and courage to explore survival paths in the dark cave. She discovers traces left by previous princesses—those sacrificed girls didn’t all accept death willingly, some left clues and weapons. Elodie gradually learns to use these resources, eventually confronting the dragon head-on. When she successfully escapes, she doesn’t choose to flee, but returns to the kingdom to expose the truth and end this bloody tradition spanning hundreds of years.

😈 Review#

This film’s biggest selling point is “subverting tropes.” In traditional fairy tales, princesses are always passive characters waiting for rescue, but Damsel completely flips this—Elodie climbs out of the abyss by herself, and goes back to save others. Millie Bobby Brown’s performance is quite excellent, convincingly portraying a transformation from innocence to resilience. This isn’t the kind of “instant empowerment” trope, but authentically shows an ordinary girl’s growth under extreme pressure.

Visually, Netflix invested heavily this time. The dragon’s modeling and rendering are quite exquisite, scale textures and flame physics effects all reach Hollywood blockbuster standards. The cave scene design also has great depth, from dark narrow passages to open dragon caverns, each space transition brings viewers different feelings of oppression or hope.

However, this film has some flaws. First is narrative pacing—the first half drags a bit, spending too much time before Elodie is thrown into the cave describing wedding ceremonies and political maneuvering, content that doesn’t contribute much to the main storyline. Second is the dragon’s setup—while visually impressive, behavioral logic has issues: a dragon that can easily devour humans, why would it be defeated by an unarmed human princess? The film’s explanation is “Elodie discovered secret weapons left by previous princesses,” but this process feels too smooth.

Overall, this is a fantasy adventure worth watching, especially for audiences tired of traditional princess fairy tales. Its core value message—women can save themselves, don’t need to wait for others—has strong resonance in this era. Though the plot has some flaws, Millie Bobby Brown’s performance and quality special effects sufficiently compensate for these shortcomings.
