Forrest was born in a small town in Alabama, born with curved spine needing correction braces, IQ test only 75, classified as “mentally challenged.” But he had a great mother who never let Forrest feel different from others, always telling him: “Remember, you’re the same as everyone else, no difference at all.”

Mother’s famous quote “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get” became the film’s most classic line.

In childhood, Forrest met the most important girl in his life—Jenny. Jenny came from a broken family, longing to escape an unhappy life. Forrest guarded Jenny with a pure heart, while Jenny became the deepest attachment in his life. When Forrest was bullied, Jenny told him “Run, Forrest, run!” This sentence opened Forrest’s extraordinary life—he broke free from the correction braces and discovered he possessed amazing running speed.

😈 Critical Review#

Best Interpretation of the American Dream#

Forrest Gump uses a “fool’s” perspective to re-examine American history in the second half of the 20th century. From President Kennedy to the Vietnam War, from Watergate to the hippie movement, Forrest witnessed the absurdity and reality of history with simple eyes.

Forrest’s success is not because of intelligence, scheming or ambition, but because of kindness, honesty, persistence and love. The film satirizes those “normal people” who think they are smart—they chase fame and fortune, speculate, but often lose their direction; while the “fool” Forrest lived the most meaningful life in the simplest way.

Forrest’s Running Journey#

Tom Hanks’ performance is perfect, he perfectly blends Forrest’s simplicity, kindness, persistence, and humor, creating the most infectious character image in film history. Hanks won the Oscar Best Actor Award for this role, winning two consecutive years created a legendary record in Oscar history.

Every expression, every movement accurately conveys the character’s inner world. Audiences forget the actor’s existence, only seeing Forrest himself. This is the highest level of acting art—not showing off skills, but completely merging into the character.

Bubba & Lieutenant Dan#

The film pioneered multiple technical breakthroughs in visual effects. Most famous is Tom Hanks’ “dialogue” scenes with historical figures—through digital technology embedding Forrest into real footage of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, creating unprecedented historical interaction.

Another breakthrough is Lieutenant Dan’s leg disappearance effect, through digital technology removing Gary Sinise’s lower legs, realistically presenting an amputee soldier image. Even after 30 years, these visual effects are still amazing.
