Synopsis
On the first day of 1900, in the first-class dining room of the luxury ocean liner SS Virginian, a coal worker named Danny Boodman discovered an abandoned infant. He named the boy “Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon 1900”—after himself, the lemon crate where the baby was found, and the year.
Danny raised the boy in the depths of the ship’s boiler room, but died tragically in an accident. From then on, 1900 lived alone on the vessel. One night, he wandered into the ballroom and heard the sound of a piano. With no formal training, he began playing perfectly—a prodigy born from the sea.
Years later, trumpeter Max Tooney joined the ship’s band and befriended this mysterious pianist. He witnessed the legendary “dueling piano” showdown between 1900 and jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton—a battle of talent, passion, and dignity. Max tried convincing 1900 to leave the ship and see the world, but never succeeded.
“The land is too big,” 1900 said. “On that ship, I could see the end of the world. A piano has 88 keys—I can control everything. But on land, there are too many choices. I can’t face that infinity.”
Eventually, the SS Virginian was scheduled for demolition. Max rushed back to find 1900 hiding in a corner. The genius pianist chose to sink with the ship, forever remaining in his own world.
