Synopsis
What If…? is Marvel’s first animated series, adapted from the classic comic book series of the same name. The series follows “The Watcher” as he guides viewers through the multiverse, exploring “what if” scenarios - What if Peggy Carter became Captain America instead of Steve Rogers? What if T’Challa was taken by Yondu and became Star-Lord? What if a zombie virus swept through the Marvel Universe?
Each episode presents an independent parallel universe story, reimagining iconic moments from the MCU and completely flipping them. The Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) is a cosmic being from an advanced civilization who has sworn never to interfere, only to observe and record all stories across the multiverse. However, as the multiverse crisis escalates, the Watcher is forced to break his oath and become the guardian of the multiverse.
Season 1 consists of 9 episodes, each approximately 30 minutes long, covering important timeline moments from World War II to Infinity War. The animation style is unique, employing a 3D rendering technique with oil painting-like textures, creating a visual experience that is both familiar and unfamiliar.
The Charm of the Multiverse
The most captivating aspect of What If…? lies in showcasing the infinite appeal of “possibilities.” The first episode, “What If… Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?”, immediately catches the eye: Peggy Carter receives the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, becoming “Captain Carter.” This setting not only flips gender roles but creates an entirely new hero. Peggy retains her intelligence, leadership, and resilience while gaining super soldier strength. The action sequences in this episode are spectacular, and the emotional interactions between Peggy and Steve (who becomes a soldier in this universe) are particularly touching.
Episode 4, “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?”, is the darkest and most profound episode of the season. Doctor Strange, in his desperation to save Christine Palmer, repeatedly resets time, ultimately descending into darkness. This episode explores themes of obsession and sacrifice, showing how terrifying a hero can become when losing moral boundaries. The animation style accordingly becomes darker and twisted, creating a suffocating atmosphere.
Episode 8, “What If… Ultron Won?”, pushes the Avengers to absolute desperation. In this universe, Ultron successfully obtains Vision’s body, becoming a nearly invincible entity. He easily defeats Thor, Hulk, and Doctor Strange, even destroying the entire planet. The battle scenes in this episode are epic, and the method of ultimately defeating Ultron is unexpected - a “Guardians” team composed of zombified heroes.
A Breakthrough in Animation Art
As Marvel’s first animated series, What If…? makes bold innovations in visual presentation. The production team employed a unique technique called “2.5D,” making 3D models appear with hand-drawn animation qualities. Character outlines feature distinct line work, while backgrounds mimic oil painting brushstrokes and textures. This style preserves the recognizability of MCU characters while giving them a comic-book expressiveness.
The fight choreography is equally impressive. In Episode 3, T’Challa’s Star-Lord action sequences are fluid and spectacular, perfectly blending Black Panther’s combat style with Guardians of the Galaxy’s space adventure elements. Episode 5’s zombie universe action scenes are filled with horror elements, as survivors must face former comrades who have now become flesh-eating monsters.
The voice cast is equally stellar. Apart from actors unable to return due to legal issues, most MCU original cast members voice their characters, including Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Ruffalo. Jeffrey Wright’s voice as the Watcher is deep and dignified, establishing a mysterious and solemn tone throughout the series.
Exploring the Essence of Heroes
The core theme of What If…? explores “what makes someone a hero.” Across different universes, we see various versions of heroes: some have lost loved ones, some gained different abilities, and some even became villains. But regardless of circumstances, the essence of a hero never changes - making the right choice in the darkest moments.
In Episode 2, T’Challa (Black Panther) is taken from Wakanda by Yondu and becomes Star-Lord. But even growing up in a different environment, he maintains his kindness and sense of justice, even persuading the Ravagers to help oppressed planets. This episode proves that heroism is an inner choice, not destiny’s arrangement.
Episode 6 sees Erik Killmonger attempting to change Wakanda’s destiny by reviving Wanda’s brother Pietro. Although his methods are extreme, his motivation stems from love for his homeland. This episode showcases the complexity of villain characters and prompts viewers to consider: given a second chance, can a person change their destiny?
