Return to Dragonstone#

Daenerys leads her massive fleet to Dragonstone, her birthplace and House Targaryen’s ancient Westeros stronghold. She establishes her command center here, planning the assault on King’s Landing.

Dragonstone’s visual effects are stunning. The castle made of volcanic rock, dragonglass discovery, and Daenerys standing on Dragonstone gazing at Westeros all demonstrate this season’s production quality.

Strategic Disagreements#

Daenerys’s advisors disagree on strategy. Tyrion recommends a gentle approach to avoid harming civilians; Olenna Tyrell and Yara Greyjoy advocate swift attack.

Daenerys ultimately chooses a middle path: attack Casterly Rock to cut off Cersei’s strategic base. However, Jaime Lannister anticipated this, trapping Daenerys’s army.

Loot Train Battle#

One of Season 7’s most spectacular sequences is the Loot Train Battle. After Lannister forces raid the Reach for supplies, Daenerys and Dothraki cavalry intercept them.

Daenerys rides Drogon from the sky, burning the Lannister supply train with dragonfire. This scene showcases dragons’ true power and makes Jaime realize what they face.

Jaime charges at Daenerys but is pushed into the river by Dickon Tarly, barely surviving. This scene shows Jaime’s courage and foreshadows his complex future relationship with Daenerys.

Dragonstone Encounter#

Jon Snow is sent to Dragonstone to request Daenerys’s help against the White Walkers. The first meeting between these legendary figures is tense and probing.

Daenerys wants Jon’s allegiance; Jon wants dragonglass and help against the White Walkers. They initially can’t agree, but gradually develop mutual respect.

Dragonglass Discovery#

Jon discovers abundant dragonglass on Dragonstone, the key weapon against White Walkers. He and Davos organize mining operations for the coming war.

Daenerys is skeptical of Jon’s White Walker warnings but ultimately chooses to trust him. This trust lays the foundation for their relationship.

Expedition Beyond the Wall#

To prove the White Walkers exist to Cersei, Jon proposes capturing a wight. He leads a small team north: Jorah Mormont, Tormund, Beric Dondarrion, and Thoros.

This expedition is extremely dangerous. They’re surrounded by White Walkers on a frozen lake island, nearly dying. Daenerys rides all three dragons to rescue them, but during this, the Night King kills Viserion with an ice spear.

Viserion’s Death#

Viserion’s death is one of Season 7’s most shocking moments. This dragon, once Daenerys’s, is killed by the Night King and resurrected as an ice dragon.

Viserion’s death not only strikes Daenerys but changes the war’s nature. Now the Night King has a dragon capable of destroying the Wall and any obstacle to his southward march.

Dragonpit Meeting#

Jon, Daenerys, and Tyrion go to King’s Landing to negotiate a temporary ceasefire with Cersei against the White Walkers. This meeting at the Dragonpit reunites many characters who haven’t seen each other in years.

Cersei initially refuses cooperation but after seeing the captured wight, agrees to a temporary truce. However, this is just her strategy: she plans to let the living and dead exhaust each other, then reap the benefits.

Jon’s Honesty#

When Cersei demands Jon remain neutral and stop working with Daenerys, Jon chooses honesty: he has already pledged to Daenerys. This choice makes negotiations harder but wins Daenerys’s complete trust.

Cersei’s Betrayal#

Cersei ultimately agrees to send troops north but is only pretending. She tells Jaime she’s hired the Golden Company, planning to seize victory after the living and dead exhaust each other.

Jaime is shocked by Cersei’s deception. He finally realizes she won’t give up power for anyone or anything. Jaime leaves King’s Landing alone, heading north to join the war against the White Walkers.

Sansa’s Leadership#

With Jon away, Sansa becomes the North’s acting leader. She shows excellent administrative skills but faces Littlefinger’s scheming.

Littlefinger tries creating division between Sansa and Arya, making them suspect each other. However, Bran’s Three-Eyed Raven abilities expose his conspiracy.

Littlefinger’s End#

One of Season 7’s climaxes is Littlefinger’s trial. Sansa, Arya, and Bran unitedly expose his conspiracies: poisoning Jon Arryn, betraying Ned Stark, and trying to plunge the North into chaos.

Arya executes Littlefinger with the Valyrian dagger. This scene marks House Stark finally avenging past tragedies and shows Arya’s capabilities as an assassin.

Arya’s Growth#

Arya returns to Winterfell in Season 7, reuniting with family. She’s no longer a little girl but a trained killer. Her sparring with Brienne shows her combat skills and strengthens her bond with Sansa.

Leaving the Citadel#

Samwell Tarly and Gilly leave the Citadel at Season 7’s beginning, as Sam can’t accept the Citadel’s conservatism and inaction. They steal important books about White Walkers and head north.

Jon’s True Identity Revealed#

Sam discovers crucial information in books: Rhaegar Targaryen’s marriage to Elia Martell was annulled, and he legally married Lyanna Stark. This means Jon Snow isn’t a bastard but Rhaegar’s legitimate son—the true heir to the Iron Throne.

Bran’s Three-Eyed Raven abilities confirm this. At Season 7’s end, Jon and Daenerys’s intimate relationship forms dramatic contrast with this discovery: Jon has been with his aunt without knowing his true identity.

Peak Visual Effects#

Season 7’s visual effects reach television’s peak. Dragon flights, Loot Train Battle’s inferno, the North’s frozen world—every scene demonstrates HBO’s production standards.

Season 7 received 22 Emmy nominations, winning multiple awards including Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Sound Editing.

Controversy and Discussion#

Season 7 also sparked some controversy. Some fans felt the plot moved too fast, with character actions sometimes seeming unreasonable. However, most still consider this one of Game of Thrones’ finest seasons.
