Humanity’s Last Hope#

Season 8’s third episode “The Long Night” is the series’ darkest and most spectacular. The White Walker army finally arrives at Winterfell, and the ultimate war between living and dead begins.

Winterfell’s defenders know this might be their last battle. Dothraki cavalry, Unsullied, Northern soldiers, and Night’s Watch fight side by side against endless waves of the dead.

Melisandre’s Final Mission#

The Red Woman Melisandre re-ignites the Dothraki blades the night before battle, bringing hope to soldiers. At dawn, she completes her final mission, walking into the snow to end her life.

Melisandre’s storyline spans the entire series; her death marks the old magic era’s end.

Arya’s Decisive Strike#

In desperate battle, the Night King nearly achieves victory. He kills Brienne, Jaime, and Jorah Mormont, leaving only Bran as his target.

Daenerys lost her most trusted advisors (Jorah dead, Tyrion’s advice repeatedly failing, Varys betraying her), lost two “children” (Viserion and Rhaegal), and Jon’s true identity threatens her claim. In extreme isolation and grief, she chooses fear over mercy.

Jaime’s Tragedy#

Jaime Lannister chooses leaving Brienne in Season 8 to return to King’s Landing and Cersei. He finds Cersei in the Red Keep’s ruins, and they’re buried together under rubble.

Jaime’s ending disappointed many fans. His character arc should have been from “Kingslayer” to true knight, but ultimately returning to Cersei seems to negate all previous development.

However, some argue this is a truthful portrayal of Jaime’s character: he loves Cersei, and this love transcends morality and reason. His tragedy is his inability to escape this toxic relationship.

Cersei’s End#

Cersei Lannister ultimately dies in Jaime’s arms, buried under Red Keep ruins. She was once Westeros’s most powerful woman but lost all children and everything.

Cersei’s ending, while simple, has poetry: she pursued power all her life but died within power’s symbol (the Red Keep).

Jon’s Difficult Choice#

After witnessing Daenerys’s atrocities, Jon Snow faces a difficult choice: stay loyal to his queen or stop more innocent deaths.

In the throne room, Jon finds Daenerys standing before dragonfire gazing at the Iron Throne. In their final conversation, Daenerys says she will “liberate” the entire world, and Jon realizes she won’t stop.

Jon kisses Daenerys, then stabs her heart. Daenerys dies in Jon’s arms, ending her conquest.

Drogon’s Choice#

After Daenerys’s death, Drogon flies to the throne room. He doesn’t harm Jon but melts the Iron Throne with dragonfire. This act symbolizes the game of thrones’ end.

Drogon carries Daenerys’s body east, back to Volantis—where her eastern journey began.

New Election#

After Daenerys’s death, Westeros’s lords gather at the Dragonpit to decide the new ruler. Tyrion proposes a new system: kings are elected by lords, not hereditary.

Tyrion recommends Bran Stark as the new king. His reasoning: Bran has the best story, and through his Three-Eyed Raven abilities, he can understand the past to make wise decisions for the future.

The lords accept this proposal (except Sansa, who demands Northern independence). Bran becomes “Bran the Broken, First of His Name, King of the Six Kingdoms.”

Meaning of Bran’s Rule#

Bran’s victory is one of Season 8’s most controversial choices. Many fans felt Bran’s screen time throughout the series was insufficient to make him the ultimate winner.

However, from another angle, Bran’s victory has meaning. He represents the old magical world merging with the new rational world. As Three-Eyed Raven, he understands history and can avoid repeating mistakes.

Sansa - Queen in the North#

Sansa Stark demands Northern independence, becoming “Queen in the North.” She experienced a complete transformation from innocent girl to mature leader, ultimately achieving her goal.

Sansa’s ending is the perfect conclusion to her character arc. She learned the game of thrones and found her place.

Arya - Westward Explorer#

Arya chooses not returning to Winterfell but sailing west to explore unknown worlds. Her adventurous spirit and pursuit of freedom make her the series’ freest character.

Arya’s ending also symbolizes Game of Thrones’ spirit: exploration, adventure, pursuing one’s own path.

Jon - True Freedom#

Jon Snow is sent back to the Wall, rejoining the Night’s Watch. However, he goes north with Tormund and the Free Folk, finding true freedom.

Jon’s ending is the best arrangement for his character. He fought for others all his life and finally found his own peace.
